Does The Moisture Content Really Matter?

Yes. You will notice the difference.

Timber used in the home as fire wood generally has a moisture content of about 20% (US Department of Agriculture Report). The minimum moisture content that can generally be obtained from air drying of timber is about 12 to 15%.

“She used my pellets and loved them. The next time she bought my pellets she was unhappy with how they burned! That surprised me, so I got a sample and tested them. They were exactly 8% moisture! From a manufacturer’s point of view, the pellets were perfect, ‘cause we were right on the maximum specification and didn’t over dry the material, which costs us money. From her point of view, the first lot were great. I suspect that they were 6% moisture pellets, and burned really hot and well, and also lasted longer because they burned hot”.

But hang on; surely the difference between 6% and 8% moisture pellets is only 2 percentage points. Yes and No! 8% moisture pellets have 33% more moisture in them than 6% pellets and there is 2% less wood by weight in these pellets. So there is less fuel in the pellet, and more of the fuel in the pellet is being wasted to boil off the water in the pellets. This means there is less wood to burn and there is noticeably less heat being put into your home.

Other Uses of Wood Pellets

Wood Pellets are great for cat litter too! The drier the pellet, the faster it will absorb moisture and the more moisture it will absorb. In addition the faster your wood pellets absorb the cat pee, the less smell there will be in your home!
