Quick Facts
Pellets are made by recycling untreated waste saw dust that would otherwise be headed for landfill. Pellets were first developed in the USA in the 1970s, in response to the energy crisis. In 2004 more wood pellet fires were sold in the USA than free-standing log burners - in fact sales of pellet fires matched those of gas fires. This a stable and growing trend. Sweden is the largest producer and consumer of wood pellets in the world. Even with total production nearing the million tonne per year mark, they still have to import pellets to meet demand. There are 5 pellet plants in New Zealand, including Wood Pellet Fuels Ltd in Ohinewai, Huntly.
