Choosing A Pellet Fire

Pellet fires, or as they are called in North America, pellet stoves, are appliances that burn wood or biomass pellets to produce heat.  There are many pellet fire manufacturers in the world and at least three in New Zealand.  In New Zealand convection room heaters are made by Parkwood Pellet Fires, and Eco Flame Ltd., both based in Christchurch.  MacKenzie make pellet fired boilers in Dunedin.  The MacKenzie boiler has found favour as a stand alone unit for hot water for domestic use or for underfloor heating, or in combination with solar hot water as a truly ecofriendly heating option.

Many more makes and models of pellet burning appliances are imported, mostly from North America or Europe.  These range from small freestanding heaters of about 5 kilowatts up to 2 megawatts and larger commercial/industrial pellet fired boilers.

All the appliances use a system of controlled feeding of the pellets from a storage hopper into the burner, usually using an auger or augers, and using forced draft control of the combustion air.  For smaller space heaters there is usually also a convection fan which pushes the room air over a heat exchanger to take the heat off the combustion gases before they exit out the exhaust vent.  So all the appliances are necessarily electric appliances, even though they use very little electricity because not much is needed to drive a fan.  Most of the room heaters are also designed to ensure that the flame is attractively seen inside the firebox, so giving that very important warming ambience of a wood flame.  There is an amazing plethora of styles and aesthetics of pellet fires, and they often become a centrepiece of a home’s living room, just as the old open fires are immortalised in the term “hearth and home”.
